Color Marking Titanium

We began our search for a fiber laser in early 2018, in order to expand the product line for Spine Wallet by adding color marking to our titanium wallets. 

We didn't know if we wanted to buy and import directly from China, or from a seller here in the USA. Ultimately we decided to buy from Lit Laser in California.

We decided on Lit Laser for a variety of reasons:

The laser was delivered in April of 2018. These are the specs we went with:

  • 30W Mopa Tuneable Fiber Laser
  • 12" x 12" CNC XY table
  • Motorized Z axis

It seemed that the community was very secretive and protective about giving any information out about parameter/settings for color marking titanium.

We experimented over the next few months and lots of scrap titanium and have been getting very consistent results. Here are a few factors that contribute to the success of color marking:

  • Surface finish of material
  • Alloy, Grade 5 will laser differently than grade 2 etc.
  • Focal Point
  • Temperature
  • Speed
  • Power
  • Frequency
  • Pulse width
  • Pitch/hatch distance
  • Direction

All that being said, here are some of the results.

    Hi Josh & Jordan, and thanks for that info. Great help to aid my efforts.
    I have just purchased a 30W MOPA direct from Reaying in China, mainly to identify medical and dental components I am machining for R&D customers.
    There was absolutely no information supplied with the machine. Not even assembly or operators manuals. I contacted them and received the usual minimum (basically zero) support. Although a short trip to China may be the next option, I have not finished annoying them via email yet. :D
